News From The Art Room

Students taking ART I, II or III-IV have been working on realistic and observational drawings this year using graphite pencil, water-soluble graphite, colored pencils, charcoal and oil pastels. After completion, student work is displayed in the building then is safely stored in the Art Rm. so that it can be considered for display in the big, end of semester ART SHOW in December. All students will get their artwork, in a folder, to take home before the December holiday break.

Many art students would appreciate having art supplies at home. The following is a list of suggested supplies, many of which are inexpensive: Graphite pencils: 2B, 4B, Jet Black extra smooth Soft eraser Smudger: double ended Prismacolor Colored Pencils (plus a colorless blender) Sharpie ultra fine pens Sketchbook White oak tag

Such supplies are available from www.dickblick.com or from art supply stores or Staples.

Library News

New books are coming in all the time! Some are requested by teachers to support the curriculum they teach, others are ones which I read about in School
Library Journal or Booklist, two sources which review new materials for school libraries. We also have a notepad kept on the circulation desk where students and staff may write down titles of books they would like to see in our holdings.
I do a bit of research about these titles and, if they look like a welcome addition,
I order them. We invite you to stop by and see what we have in our “New Books” area.
Along similar lines, take a look at “Library Information” which may
be accessed via our school webpage. Two databases in particular- VOL (Vermont On-Line) and CultureGrams are new this year. Both may be used from home. VOL access may be gained by stopping by the library to get the password.
Lastly, I’d like to remind you that the library is partnering with The Galaxy Bookshop to sponsor a book fair from Monday, November 5, through Saturday, November 10. During that time the Galaxy will donate 20% of any book purchases made by members of the Hazen community to the Hazen library. Simply stop by the bookstore during those dates, do your shopping, and when finalizing your purchases, tell them you’re making a ”book fair” purchase.
On Tuesday, November 6th, there will be a special event at the Galaxy. During the afternoon, beginning at 4:00, there will be a reception. Drinks and refreshments will be provided while you shop, and, hopefully, other Hazen and community members will attend to visit and share reading suggestions. At 7:00, author Archer Mayor will speak about his latest novel, Chat. It is our
hope that the book fair and author visit will encourage us all to find the time to read. The upcoming holidays provide the perfect opportunity to give someone a book and hours of reading pleasure.

Physical Education

Middle school students are just about finished their fall fitness testing. Results will be mailed home after all data has been entered and compiled, and award winners will be recognized in class and in the display case, located in the hallway by the gym. Four new middle school fitness records have been set as a result of this fall’s testing: Jake D., 106 push-ups; Bianca C., 12” sit and reach; Morgan W., 8.4 sec. shuttle run; and Sarah B., 92 push-ups. Congratulations to these new record-holders, and to all participants who did their best! The next unit for the 7th and 8th graders is a game called Speedball, which is a fast-paced game mixing soccer, basketball, and football into one. The lifetime-sports senior high classes have been enjoying our new badminton sets, which include sleeves underneath the floor for easy set-up and tight, rugged nets. Thanks to Jeff LeCours and Co. for their work on our new badminton system. We would also like to recognize our eight senior high students assisting our middle school classes: Jessica M., Jennifer L., Kaitlyn F., Chelsea C., Josh M., Billy V., Justin D., and Evan D.. Thanks for helping out!

Dear Parents and Community of Hazen Union Students,

This is the eighth school where I have worked as a teacher. Though many of my previous experiences have also been wonderful, the students here at Hazen are exceptional. When I ask my Spanish students to complete an assignment, they are respectful. Not only do the students (usually) complete the work on time, but the parents, with whom I have had the opportunity to speak, have been supportive as well. This is a place where students continue to impress me. It is thanks to you, the parents and community of these outstanding individuals, that these young people are maturing in a way so complimentary to your upbringing.

The students have been respectful, hard working, pleasant and kind. Whenever I have felt they needed to work harder, I merely had to tell them and they have done so. I cannot tell you how much shorter my hour and a half long trip to work has become simply because I so look forward to spending time with these students.

Thank you for sharing your students. I am in hopes that their experiences during my class continue to enhance the already obviously mature growth process happening within each student.

Thank you,
Mary Morrison

Energy use update:

Good news! Our electric bill for the month of October has decreased since last year. During the past month we used 35,996 Killowatt hours. During the same period last year, we used 37,996 Killowatt hours. That is a 3.6% savings in electricity usage. In dollars, we saved $217.84 worth of electricity this month.

Unfortunately, to meet the goal Superintendent Ford set for us of $2,000 worth of electricity savings, we will have to save even a little more electricity in each of the coming months. Here are some things we can do:

Students: Turn off lights and computers when you are the last person to use them.

Teachers: Consider purchasing a desk lamp that would allow you to work at your desk with the classroom lights off during prep time. This could save about 100$ per teacher per year.
