Library News

Have you thought about holiday shopping yet? When you do, please consider thinking BOOKS. They make a wonderful gift for all ages. Maybe you know a specific book or author who is a favorite of your student, parent, or friend. I bring this up as an introduction to our first (hopefully annual) nontraditional book fair with the Galaxy Bookshop. From Monday, November 5, through Saturday, November 10, the Galaxy will donate 20% of any book purchases made by members of the Hazen community to the school library. Simply stop by the bookstore during those dates, do your shopping, and when finalizing your purchases tell them you’re making a “book fair” purchase. On Tuesday, November 6th, there will be a special event at the Galaxy. During the afternoon, starting at 4:00, there will be a reception. Drinks and refreshments will be provided while you shop, and, hopefully, other Hazen and community members will attend to visit and share reading suggestions. At 7:00, author Archer Mayer will speak about his latest novel, Chat. It is our hope that this will encourage us all to find the time to read. Really, a book is a gift which provides hours of pleasure, and the Galaxy has an extensive collection to choose from. How about a book for someone’s stocking? If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, Judy Henchel, at Hazen’s library, or Linda Ramsdell at the Galaxy. On another note, please check out the library link on the school web page. Among the new additions is access to VOL (Vt. On Line), a wonderful database which provides a reference encyclopedia, magazines and news articles, and much more. It’s a valuable tool to use when researching any topic and it may be accessed at home by using a password (which may be obtained in the library).

That’s all for now! Enjoy the glorious fall weather!

Nicole K. and Chelsea J. of 7th grade and Mr. Metcalf were the winners of the Spanish bulletin board contest. The new bulletin board features places we find Spanish in our community. Bring in an item with Spanish on it, write a one paragraph essay answering the question "Why do we find Spanish in our community?" and you will enter to win the next taste test. From the Principal’s Desk…

Autumnal Greetings to One and All!

I am very happy to report that our recently held Open House was a huge success and I would like to thank all of the teachers, students, and parents who made this event a great evening for all! Special thanks go out to Kathy Light who coordinated the music for the evening as Roy M. played the violin and Jonathan B. played the bagpipes! In addition, Joe Dekens assisted with the overall coordination and Patty Foster prepared a superb table of goodies that greeted everyone upon their arrival.

NECAP testing will begin next week and a special letter will be sent addressing the details. Testing will take place in grades 7, 8, and 11 and it is very important that students get a good night’s rest and have a nutritional breakfast before taking the tests. We will offer breakfast and snacks to those students, as we believe that nutrition is an integral component to a successful testing experience. NECAP and SAT test data are located in the lobby, for your perusal. We are proud of our continuing success and Hazen is certainly on the move!

Beginning on October 1, we will change our student drop-off and pick-up traffic pattern. The traffic flow will go around the parking lot so students can be met or dropped off at the gymnasium entrance between the hours of 7:00 am – 8:00 am and 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm. This is so that we can maintain a safe environment during two very busy times of the day.

Progress reports will be going home soon. Please feel free to contact us with any questions that you might have. Our goal is to offer the best and most accelerated education for your son or daughter! Soon, a survey will be sent home to gather data about our educational program, areas for improvement and an interest survey for new courses to be offered for 2008-2009.

You make it happen!

Physical Education

The middle school is just days away from beginning their fall fitness testing. Each student will be tested in five areas measuring strength, flexibility, endurance, and quickness; fitness reports will be mailed home to 7th and 8th graders after testing is completed. Parents of middle schoolers, feel free to encourage some at-home pushups, sit-ups, and/or cardio exercise as we prepare for the fitness tests (stacking firewood or other chores will also do the trick!) In the meantime, the soccer unit is wrapping up, with touch football next up.

The senior high is involved in a variety of activities depending on which section they chose to be in. Although its still early, students seem generally pleased with the new format in the senior high allowing them to pick between three “branches” of p.e : team sports, fitness room, and lifetime sports. Thank you to Dan Hudson, Dick Bashaw, and Mt View for donating several dozen used tennis balls to our program. (This doesn’t include the 13 that Dan hit out of the courts last Wednesday night).

You might have noticed the American Heart Association (which we partner with to do a fundraiser in December) has revised their CPR guidelines emphasizing more chest compressions. Their policy now is for 30 chest compressions for every two rescue breaths. Valuable information to keep close to your heart, considering 80 % of heart attacks occur in the home.
