MIDDLE LEVEL, ALL STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

 

The Hardwick Trails Committee needs poems for the trail.  Please give your poems to Mrs. Trecartin.  All grades are welcome.

 

The 8th grade class is hosting a school dance on Friday, April 18th from 7:00-10:00 p.m.  The cost is $5.  Lance will be the DJ and there will be refreshments.  Hope to see you there!  Don’t miss it – this is the last dance of the school year.

 

Yearbooks are on sale now!  $25 per book or $32 with your name embossed on the front.  Get your order in before Friday, April 18th.  You can purchase them every morning in the front lobby.

 

Middle school students who have read five (5) or more books on this year’s DCF list please stop by the library to participate in the statewide voting.  Today is your last chance!  Also, we have some of the books, both Green Mountain and DCF, on the new, 2008-2009 lists.  Stop by the library to take a look!

 

April is National Poetry Month.  We have a wide assortment of poetry books, including some new ones.  Stop by to take a look!

 

The Hardwick Area Community Coalition needs teens to face paint, fill water balloons, play games, and lead crafts at the Spring Festival on May 24th, from 12:30-4:00 p.m.  They have also asked us to design activity signs and button designs for small children to color.  Stop by the library after school to speak with Mrs. Miller.

 

SENIOR HIGH NEWS

 

Outing Club will meet today, Friday, after school in Mr. Considine’s room.  New members are always welcome.  Come join us as we plan exciting travel opportunities for the rest of the year.

 

Will all juniors please give any pictures they have of other juniors through the years to Mrs. Grover or someone else on the prom committee.

Community Service Opportunity:  Vermont Soy in Hardwick is look for 3-4 committed volunteers to help with their table at the Hardwick Farmer’s Market beginning May 23rd.  This is a great way to get all of your community service hours completed.  See

            GUIDANCE NEWS

 

            The Honorable Jim Douglas, Governor of the State of Vermont, is seeking to appoint a student to the State Board of Education.  This is an excellent opportunity for students with an interest in education and related politics.  Students must be graduating in 1010 or later to be considered.  This is a two (2) year term that will begin on July 1, 2008.  The deadline for applications is May 16, 2008.  If you or someone you know is interested in applying for this gubernatorial appointment, please see Cindy in Guidance for an application.

 

            League of Women Voters of VT Educational Fund, Inc. is awarding the Winona Smith Scholarship grant to a male or female graduate who has demonstrated an interest in civic participation and community service, who has a need for financial aid, and who is recommended by a teacher. The award is $500.  The deadline is May 2, 2008.

 

            Court St. Veronica #1273 Catholic Daughters Award Application.  The 2008 award will be in the amount of $250 and will be presented after the recipient has successfully completed the first semester of college.  (must be returning to college 2nd semester). Requirements:  Must be a practicing catholic, graduating senior, related to a member of Court St. Veronica #1273 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas (relationship includes child, grandchild, niece, nephew).  Deadline is May 8, 2008.  Pick up information from the scholarship folders on the counter in Guidance.

 

            All Juniors planning on going to college, please sign-up for your SAT’s as soon as possible for the June 7th testing here at Hazen.

 

            COLLEGE BOUND SENIORS – URGENT!  URGENT!  Please let Guidance know ASAP what colleges you have been accepted to and, when you decide, le us know where you plan to attend so that we can get your final transcript out.

 

            New England Association for College Admission Counseling announces its third Annual Essay Contest for high school Juniors and Seniors.  Three winning participants will be awarded scholarships of $500, $300 and $200.  The essay must be 500 words on the following topic:  Describe a counselor, teacher or experience that has had the greatest influence on your decision to attend college.  How has this individual or experience impacted our future?  What will you do in college or beyond that will make a difference in your community?  Deadline is Wednesday, April 23rd.  Please see Cindy in Guidance for more information.

 

            Seniors:  Scholarship opportunities are coming in every day … don’t forget to check the folders on the guidance counter.

           

            St. Johnsbury Rotary Club … Four awards of $1,000 each.  A 500-word essay that needs to reflect the Rotary motto of  “Service Above Self”.  Community service is the paramount criteria for the selection process.  More information in theGuidance Scholarship Files.  Deadline:  May 1, 2008.

 

            The 13th NEK Career Fair sponsored by VSAC will be held on May 21st from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Lyndon State College. More information will be available as the date approaches.  You must sign up to participate in this fair.  See Cindy in Guidance.  All sophomores should plan to participate.

 

            Boston University is offering high school students exciting opportunities for the summer.  High School Honors is a six-week residential or commuting program in which students can either take two Boston University undergrad courses, earning up to eight (8) credits or conduct scientific research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.  Must be entering senior year the fall of 2008.  Summer Challenge is a two-week residential program for students entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade in the fall of 2008.  Students enroll in two non-credit seminars choosing from abnormal psych, business, creative writing, ecology, history of Boston, international politics, intro to Chinese, journalism law, mass communication, persuasive writing and visual arts … great for students who wish to explore college-level work without the pressure of grades.  See guidance for more information.

            PARENTS & COMMUNITY

 

Lamoille Family Center presents a parenting workshop series entitled 1-2-3 Magic.  This video workshop will provide participants with parenting strategies for children without yelling, arguing or spanking.  The workshops will begin April 29th, and run through

May 20th at the Family Center on Tuesdays from 6:00-8:00 p.m.  A $15 fee will cover the course and book.  Class size is limited.  Call the Family Center at 888-5229.
