  Facts:
  • Nearly all of the of the structures and organs are now formed and beginning to function.
  • The baby is now considered a fetus
  • Fetus is now beginning to develop hair and nails
  • The fetus begins to take on gender characteristics
  • The head of the fetus is now half the length of it's body
  • The eyes of the fetus shut and  the irises begin to develop
  • Fingers and toes are beginning to separate
  • The muscles in the intestinal wall begin to practice contractions, as well as digesting food
  • The amniotic fluid begins to accumulate as the kidneys begin to function
  • Fetus is now 1.61 inches long and weighs 0.25 ounces

  Tests:
  • The Doppler machine can be used to hear the heart beat of an unborn baby
  • During the Amniocentesis process a doctor can extract amniotic fluid, by using a long needle, from the woman's abdomen for analysis. The mother may feel cramping during or after the process.
